Obituary for Isobel Jean (Erwin) Merchen

Isobel Jean (Erwin) Merchen returned to our Lord Jesus Christ on June 16, 2019. Born in Bremerton, WA on December 22, 1928. Isobel was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Isobel was preceded in spirit by her daughter Gail Boatman, sisters Anne Medbury and Eleanor Kent, her parents John and Isobel Sprunt, husband Orland L. Merchen and stepdaughters Linda Thompson and Carol Rhodes. Survivors include first husband Samuel Erwin and sons John Erwin (Sue) of Fort Worth, TX and Mark Erwin (Vanessa) of McKee, KY along with grandchildren Ireanna Erwin, Michael Erwin, Brian Boatman, Charisse Davidian, and Gary Boatman and great grandchildren Violet Erwin, Max, Luke and Charli Boatman. Along with stepchildren Garvin Merchen of Port Orchard, WA, Dana Chavez of Allyn, WA, Jody Strub (John) of Billings, MT, Charlene Schauer of Port Orchard, WA and many nieces and nephews and their children in both marriages.
Isobel lived a long and quality life that was characterized daily by generosity, kindness and a servant’s heart. Isobel greatly loved flowers, her father was grounds keeper for the Ammunition Depot in Bremerton and began her love for flowers. She worked for a florist as her 1st job while attending college, and throughout her lifetime she kept and maintained beautiful flower gardens. Isobel was very involved with her church, Summit Ave Presbyterian in Bremerton. Isobel also loved baseball, especially the Seattle Mariners. Isobel loved reading, crosswords, and board and card games. Favorites were Cribbage and Scrabble. Family and friends will especially remember the cookies Isobel baked and gifted over all of her years.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM Sunday, July 14, 2019 at the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Corbin, KY. At a later date there will be a graveside service at Knights of Pythis Cemetery in Port Orchard, WA, where her ashes will rest in peace.
