Phyllis Strunk Obituary

Phyllis Jane (Morris) Strunk of Gray Hawk, KY departed this life Saturday, October 14, 2017 at her residence in Gray Hawk being 72 years of age. Phyllis was born February 2, 1945 in Cincinnati, OH to the late Luther and Mayme (Lakes) Morris. She grew up in Gray Hawk, KY, graduated from Annville Institute in Annville, KY and then Sullivan College in Louisville, KY. She was an executive secretary at the Brinly-Hardy Company in Louisville, KY and Interstate Coal Company in London, KY, employed at Hammond and Hammond Law Firm in Highland, IN, and bookkeeper at D&W Electric in Gray Hawk, KY, from where she retired in 2007.

Phyllis married Layne K. Strunk on October 26, 1974. They resided in Highland, IN until 1975 when they moved back to her home place in Gray Hawk, KY, where they have resided since.

Phyllis was a member of the Gray Hawk Baptist Church. It was there she was a member of the choir and the women’s Sunday school teacher until she was unable to attend services. Phyllis loved the Lord and her church family. Prior to singing with the Gospelettes, she sang with the Three Sisters, comprised of her and her two older sisters, Hazel and Judy. She had the voice of an angel.

In addition to her loving husband, Layne, Phyllis is survived by three sons: Christopher Layne (Elizabeth) Strunk of Berea KY, Phillip Craig Strunk of Lexington, KY and Matthew Kyle (Shawnee) Strunk of Gray Hawk, KY; one daughter, Jessica Elayne Strunk of Richmond, KY; one brother, Larry Keith (Rhonda) Morris of Mt. Juliet, TN; three sisters, Hazel Mae Morris of Berea, KY, Judith Ann (Nelson) Dunaway of Miamisburg, OH, and Donna Ruth Morris of Benbrook, TX; sister-in-law, Ann Lincoln (Strunk) Morris of Somerset, KY; and brother-in-law, Lynn Allen Strunk of New Market, AL.

Phyllis is survived by seven beautiful grandchildren: Emma Elizabeth, Isabelle Jane, and Abram James Strunk of Berea, KY; Kyla Jade, Kendall Lee, Mila Rose, and Timber Grace Strunk of Gray Hawk, KY.

Phyllis also had nephews and nieces whom she loved very much: Lynne Marie Dunaway, Scott Nelson Dunaway, Douglas Allen (Heather) Morris, David Lincoln Morris, Daryn Luther (Donna) Morris, John (Kelly) Thomasson III, Jennifer Alyse Beck and Collin Strunk, and her great nieces and nephews, Jack, Sara, Kenzlie, Camden, Morgan, Jackson, Kaitlyn, Chloe, Giovanna, Giulianna, Andie and Wesson; and great-great niece Mya.

In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her oldest brother Jack Douglas Morris and stepmother Macy (Purdue) Morris.

Prior to Phyllis’ passing she had excellent care from Hospice Care Plus, the nurses and doctors of St. Joseph of Berea, caregivers Judy Isaacs, Michelle Hacker and her first-cousin Wanda Graves.

Funeral services will be Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Lakes Funeral Home in McKee, KY, officiated by Rev. Ronald Rose, Rev. Everett VanZant, and Rev. Carroll DeForrest, with burial at Pisgah Cemetery in Somerset, KY. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Lakes Funeral Home in McKee, KY.

Pallbearers are Douglas Allen Morris, David Lincoln Morris, Daryn Luther Morris, Scott Nelson Dunaway, Adam Duncan and Malachi Smith. Honorary Pallbearers are Collin Strunk, Anthony Dunaway, Andrew Dunaway, John Thomasson III, Greg Price, Matthew McQueen, Travis Nunn, Kevin Flannery, Joe Duncan and Aaron Duncan.
