Obituary for Elaine Tevelde

Elaine Faith Te Velde, of McKee, Kentucky, was born April 27th, 1940 in Brooten, Minnesota and went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018. She passed peacefully at the age of 77 at her residence among the serene hills and mountains of Kentucky, which she loved and where she had found comfort among great friends for over twenty-three years. Elaine was the daughter of the late Lubertus & Gertrude (Vos) Te Velde, both of whom had emigrated from the Netherlands when young.

Elaine loved being outdoors in Kentucky with friends, whether it was sitting by a cabin fire telling stories all night or riding an ATV through the woods. She also loved baking pies, canning vegetables, making quilts, and singing hymns. While Elaine eschewed traditional services late in life, her faith was strong, she prayed and read the bible often, and her faith strengthened the beliefs of many others.

Elaine was a dedicated worker and wise manager. Her occupations through life included teaching, cleaning, sewing, and assisting in a doctor’s office. Before moving to Kentucky to more fully enjoy life, Elaine was the Housekeeping Manager at Community Memorial Hospital in Menominee Falls, Wisconsin, where she was a respected coach and mentor to her team.

Elaine is survived by her four children: Timothy Vander Woude of Telluride, Colorado; David (wife Tammy) Vander Woude of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Daniel (wife Polly) VanderWoude of Larchmont, New York; and Sara (husband Randy) Berg of Bentonville, Arkansas. Elaine is also survived by four siblings: two brothers, Gerrit “John” Te Velde and Conrad “Con” Te Velde in Washington; and two sisters, Bertha Smit in Washington and Gertrude Bothof in Wisconsin. Elaine was blessed with twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Elaine was preceded in everlasting life by the following siblings: Berendina (Bernie), Johanna (Joey), Herman, and Albert.

Visitation with family and friends will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 3rd, at the Lakes Funeral Home in McKee with a funeral service at the same location starting at 2:00 PM; Pastor Josh Chasteen officiating. Burial will follow at the Annville Cemetery (near 4178 KY-3630, Annville, KY).

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Citizens United in Research for Epilepsy (

Elaine has ‘gone home’, but she will forever be in our hearts.
