Obituary for Edward "Ed" Hicks

Edward Hicks, age 94, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore, KY.
Ed was born October 18, 1922 in Tyner, Jackson County, KY, son of the late William and Cynthia (Addison) Hicks. Ed was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.
In 1942 Ed married Mary Lou King. Mary preceded him in death in 2003. They were married for 61 years, they were blessed with two children, Jerry Lee Hicks of Osgood, IN and Janet (husband Ray) Cole of Richmond, KY. Ed was “Poppy” to five grandchildren, one step grandchild, four great grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. The five grandchildren are: Eddy Cunagin (wife Lisa) of Sartell, Minnesota, Anthony Cunagin (wife Madonna) of Richmond, KY, Jeffrey Lee Hicks of Salyersville, KY, Christopher Michael Hicks of Salyersville, Amy Danielle Rogier (husband Andrew) of Oldenberg, IN; the great grandchildren are: Allison Raye Cunagin, Emmitt Rogier, Wes Rogier, Tucker Rogier; the step grandchild is: Stephanie Cole Koher and the step great grandchildren are: Leticia Koher, Lucas Koher, Lathan Koher and Lila Koher.
Ed had one brother, Hobert Hicks, Tyner, KY, who preceded him in death.
At a young age of 19, Ed was drafted into the Army to begin his service during WWII. He served more than three years. Ed received five bronze stars for fighting in five of the great battles of WWII, including Omaha Beach on D Day on June 6, 1944, over 9,000 men died that day including Ed’s best friend who was fighting beside him at Omaha Beach. Ed said, “I felt as if God himself was about me, caring for me and protecting me and our journey was just beginning”. He was a Hero then and still is.
Funeral service was held 11:00AM Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Lakes Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Fort and Ray Cole officiating. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery. Pallbearers were Eddy Cunagin, Anthony Cunagin, Jeffrey Lee Hicks, Christopher Hicks, Matt Hillard, Andrew Rogier, and William Banks. Military services were conducted by the following members of the D.A.V. Jack Welch Chapter #165, David Gray, Jim Bryant, Danny Robinson, Fred Sandlin, Dallas Isaacs, Shane Morris, Lewis Sparks, Rick Powell, Leon Bates, Paul Trent, Raymond Metcalf and Mike Montgomery. Lakes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
