Obituary for Charley Lewis

Charley Lewis of Tyner passed away peacefully at home on August 16, 2017, at the age of 103.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 78 ½ years, Cleda Lee Lewis; his parents, Thomas and Sarah Lewis of Terrels Creek; two brothers, Ray and Earl Lewis; and one sister, Dora McKinney.

He is survived by his only child, Londa Leah Wagoner (James) as well as four grandchildren – Sheri Evans Depp (Dwayne), Donald Wade Evans, Melinda J. Wolanin (Jason Peoples) Tammy W. (Mark) McKinley; five great-grandchildren – Waverly T. Evans, Gillian L. Evans, William A. Peoples, Alexander J. Peoples, Dwayne F. Depp II; eleven nieces and nephews; several loving and compassionate caregivers – Sandy, Cora, Louise, and Darlene, who were with him till the end.

He was a member of Tyner Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years until his health prevented his active participation.

Mr. Lewis was a graduate of Annville Institute and Eastern Kentucky University, where he completed a Master’s Degree. He taught high school at Tyner and McKee, coached basketball, served a year as interim superintendent of Jackson County Schools, and served as a school board member. He went to work for the state as a family services worker in the 1950s and retired as a regional supervisor.

He served in World War II as a separation counselor and received an honorable discharge in September, 1945. He received recognition for good conduct and rifle marksmanship.

The family and community will remember him as a person who, without any fanfare, was loving to all and willing to reach out a hand to those who needed a boost or a push to help make their lives easier. His family was the light of his life, and they will greatly miss his patriarchal concern and advice.
